A dance like folk melody in 3/4 G minor is played by Alto Saxophone then repeated in woodwind sections. A contrasting faster section in 2/4 includes flourishing scales in woodwinds with muted brass supporting chord structures in rhythm. The first melody returns in the 3/4 meter with variations in melody, harmony and orchestration. A slower 2/4 section ends the piece. The key signature is two flats throughout, but there is extensive use of added note chords often based around diminished chords to add color around the G tonal center. Three Valencian folk dances. I. "Dansa Caracteristica" is in 2/4 meter with high clarinets playing the melody. The orchestration changes throughout including sometimes a thick accompaniment with counterpoint against the simple melody. II. "Ball de Vellas" is in a waltz like 3/4 meter with is scored more delicately than the first movement. A middle section has a taste of Stravinsky in colorful orchestration. III. After a short contrasting section C major, there is a return of the primary theme to Eb major, but more fully scored. The coda is in three parts - first and Allegro in Cb major with a flourishing melody in Eb Clarinet and Alto Sax, second a return to the introduction mood of slow open fifths, then an ending "tag" with a fast Allegro of three measures. Composition Notes

In four movements "Cuadros levantinos" Arrangements of four folk songs with slight variations. I "En la muntanya - Festa" starts "con calma" piano with fugal entries beginning with the basses then continuing with tenor, alto and soprano voices. Short folk melodies are presented with limited counterpoint. The tempo animato section presents a clear presentation of a a folk melody in flutes and flüglehorn with the variations primarily presented in different orchestrations and accompaniments. Movement II "Dansa d'Albaida" presents a folk melody in 3/4 meter in "Moderamente mosso" with the triple rhythm accentuated in the percussion throughout most of the movement. The middle section changes from major to minor in a faster tempo in 2/4. The the movement ends in the same meter and tempo as it begins. Movement III "Interior" is in common meter in "Andante moderato, molto tranquilo". This movement has a bit of chromaticism as opposed to the other movements. The movement starts in B mixolydian mode with chromatic functional chords leading to a 6/8 section in E harmonic minor. The tonality shifts to E major then to the final key of E minor with the ending chord of the dominant. Movement IV "Lo ball dels nanos" is based on a humorous folk song which is first presented in the oboe. The Allegro Moderato tempo in 2/4 is consistent throughout the movement where the most technical challenging material is presented. Composition Notes

Commissioned for the Certamen Nacional de Bandas de Musica Civiles "Ciudad de Requena" 1994 by the Fundacion "Ciudad de Requena" for the "Santa Cecilia" Music Society of Requena. A Symphonic Poem in one movement starting "Misterioso y Evocator" with an English Horn solo presenting the first two measure theme over a static harmony. A trombone continues adding glissandi over clusters in the clarinets. The harmony progresses as the English Horn continues an extension of the first solo to complete an eight measure phrase. The melody is then repeated in the clarinets. Repeating quintuplet patterns set up the contrasting section in 5/8 meter. The two ideas are developed throughout the rest of the composition, usually in clear 4 measure or eight measure phrases often in repetition with the same harmonies. Extended solos for English Horn, Trombone and Flüglehorn. Tonal centers are very clear with harmonic progressions usually one or two chords per measure. Texture is mostly homophonic with an extensive use of ostinato throughout the piece.
