Listed as a Symphonic Poem. The piece starts "Lento" 3/4 in C major with a sustained pianissimo in dominant open fifths in the basses while a chime repeats a tonic dotted half note with alternating descending half steps in muted trumpets and trombone from tonic to dominant then directly to tonic. Woodwinds then present the primary four measure theme a cappella in piano dynamic, outlining a C major triad "sol, mi, do" then triplet arpeggiations up to the "la" before cadencing on "sol". An exact (C major) repetition in pianissimo without oboes, then two a cappella repetitions on E major leads a transition section using fragmentation to a tonic presentation of the four measure melody with a consequent phase added. Development continues to a Pasodoble tempo" where the intervalic material is used. Development of the primary involves thematic transformations in various tempos: "Tempo de Marcha regular", "Allegro mucho", "Allegretto", "Tempo de Vals (Waltz)", "Grandioso" and "Vivace". Harmonic vocabulary is by triads with some sevenths used in traditional voice leading. Melodies are diatonic with uses of chromaticism. Harmonic progressions are functional with some uses of deceptive resolutions some abrupt modulations. |

Studied at the Conservatories in Valencia and Madrid with professors Sánchez, Fayos, Amancio Amorós, Salvador Giner and Bartolomé Pérez Casas. Was the band director of "La Artesana" of Catarroja. He composed two pieces for orchestra, pieces for chamber ensembles, religious compositions as well as the bulk of his output for band and Zarzuelas. |

In Six movements First movement "Introduccion and Marcha" starts adagio in 6/8 meter with a cantabile oboe solo then a march in 2/4 starting with woodwinds and building up to full orchestration. Second movement "Intermedio" is in "Lento e Sostenuto" with an alto saxophone solo. Third movement "Sequidillas" is in Allegro 3/4 meter with a dance character. Fourth movement "Nocturno" is in Andante non troppo 2/4 meter featuring a flüglehorn solo, then going to an "Allegretto" featuring a trumpet solo. Fifth movement "Bolero" is in 3/4 meter. Sixth movement "Bailén" in Allegro maestoso 4/4 meter starts with unison trombones presenting the first melody in half notes and quarter notes with block chords accompanying on beats 2 and 4. The movement builds to a march over repeating ostinato to a big ending in fortissimo. All movements are very melodic and characteristic. Harmonies are triadic with melodic development and variation along modalities stylistic with the Spanish style. Harmonic vocabulary in triads, with a few passages outside the normal modal and tonal scales with progressions often involving sequences within modes to create a characteristic Spanish flavor. Solos for oboe, flute, trumpet, flüglehorn and alto saxophone. |

Born in Barcelona in 1916 his studies led him to Valencia where he became the Professor of Composition at the Conservatory of Valencia. He won numerous composition awards including the "Como el Nacional" in 1950 and "Ciudad de Barcelona" in 1954 as well as awards from the cities of Alicante and Valencia. He had composed an extensive number of compositions during his life. He left Valencia to live and teach composition at the Conservatory in Madrid. He died in 1996. |

In two movements. First movement "Occident" starts Largo with an introductive melody in the woodwinds which is repeated with variations in different orchestrations. The faster Alla Marcia section features trumpet and horn sections over static chords. Interlude solos feature oboe and trumpet with the recapitulation of the beginning theme in variation. The second movement "Orient" is a theme and variations with the main theme based on a synthetic scale utilizing augmented 2nds. Some of the variations are in changing meters of 3/8 and 5/8. There are extended solos for oboe and flute. The harmonies are usually concerted tertian structures. The first movement has many changes of key. There are no key signatures in the second movement. |

After studying in Alcoy with P.Pérez-Jorge and at the Valencia conservatory with Roca, Gomá and Palau, Blanes, born in Teruel in 1929, received a grant from the Fundación Lope to study in Paris with Simone Plé. He taught at the conservatories in Valencia and Sevilla and received the honors of a grant from the Fundación March, the title of Profesor Honorario del Conservatorio "Vert" and university professor of EGB. The list of prizes for his compositions is extensive including the Premio Nacional "J. Rodrigo" for his choral work, the Premio del Ateneo de Sevilla for his chamber music and the Premio "Valencia" for his band piece, "La Font Roja". His piece, "Semblances de la Meua Terra", was performed during the centennial celebration of the Certamen de la Feria in Valencia. |

Commissioned by the city of Valencia for the 1988 Certamen. In two movements. First movement starts "Adgieto" starts with a slow three-note motive over a timpani roll that is presented in consecutive measures by bassoon, flute, oboe and bass clarinet. A expansion using fuller orchestration preludes an "Allegro Vivace" section in 3/8 meter. Tempo changes occur but the triple meters continue with with changes to 3/4 and 6/8 until the end of the movement which returns to "Adagieto" in 2/4 meter. The "Majestuoso" section ends the first movement. The second movement "Hogaño" starts an introductory "Lento" with a sustained chord in piano supporting a glissando in first trombones with vibraphone and high woodwinds added later in a similar manner. The primary theme of this movement is in "Allegro" 3/4 meter with a long three note motive presented by the trombones over a long timpani roll. The woodwinds counter with flourishing scales. The movement continues with tempo changes to Lento then Allegretto before an extended section features the percussion section alone. The recapitulation of the Allegro uses the same orchestration as before. The piece ends with fortissimo chords in Lento. Harmonic vocabulary includes tertian structures with added note chords sometimes added to create dissonance. Chords are usually functional with added dissonance. |

Starting with five florid notes, the sentiment descends with the velocity of dizziness, accompanied with the harmonies of horns, bassoons and later with trombones giving a brief introduction that serves as the preparation of the theme in "Allegretto grazioso". After the presentation of the first theme, the piece turns to a humorous tone in "Allegretto" and contained in the central part, returning subsequently a re-exposition for the final conclusion. The principal theme is transformed into different timbres of instruments, starting with oboe, continuing with the piccolo and flute, trumpet and bassoons. The ending of the movement includes irregular rhythms with glissandos in the brass and woodwind sections. The central part (Andante Tranquilo) continues the same conception to drive the principal theme in diverse sonorous timbres starting with the flute then saxophone, oboe, clarinets in dialogue for half of the colorful sonorities with mutes. Everyone arrives in a "tutti" with the principal theme, representing the conception of sound for the entire band. His composition prizes include the "Joaquin Rodrigo" prizes in 1970 and 1974, the "Manuel Palau" Prize in 1974, the "Maestro Villa" prize in 1984 as well as many others. He has many publications including the texts "Musicos Valencianos" book 1 and 2 which have been the first documentations of their kind for the composers of Valencia. He is active giving master classes in composition and conducting. He now is the director of the Spanish National Navy Band in Madrid. |

These two distinct dances with the first slower dance as a prelude to the second. The first dance is in a slow triple meter tempo with various soloists featured: oboe, French horn, and flüglehorn. The first dance is played in a soft dynamic throughout until the very ending cadence which is in forte. The second dance is similar in the melodic structure, but has more differences in tempo and dynamic. At times there are very melodic solos then at times there are very metric almost march-like sections. The harmonic vocabulary is triadic with some extensions used for color. At times the harmony is reminiscent of Percy Granger with the way in which the dissonance are used in cadences, especially the second dance. |

The piece is written for one movement, tells from the musical perspective of the heroic gesture of the town of Madrid in the date in history of May 2, 1808. In the passing of time of the same appears to call the majestic winds and brass playing with the timbre of battle, reflecting the description from the musical and religious perspective together with the sonorous timbres and diverse playing. This program is taken from the text of poet Luís López Anglada that portrayed the action that immortalized the intense brief period of this intense moment in history. |

One of the most performed Pasodobles in Valencia. This is performed extensively for "Los Fallas" which is a four-day fiesta in March when all the pueblos in Valencia province as well as Valencia itself displays "fallas" (statues made of wood and paper) and have many processions in the street. |

Born in Sueca (Valencia) October 14, 1873; died March 8, 1941 in Madrid. One of the most popular Zarzuela composers. Every band in Valencia has at least a dozen of his fifty Zarzuelas. His first musical studies were with his father who was the band director in Sueca. At ten years old he was playing piano, guitar and violin and percussion in his father's band. In Valencia he studied harmony and composition with Salvador Giner, piano with Roberto Segura and violin with Andrés Goñi. He later won a grant to study in Madrid with Jesús Monasterio and Emilio Serrano. From 1900 to 1905 he composed eighteen zarzuelas. He composed the famous Pasodoble "El Fallero" for the fiestas in Valencia in 1925. His other contributions are the "Hymn of Valencia" and other patriotic songs of Spain and Valencia One of the most popular Spanish composers, he has streets named in his honor in Madrid, Valencia and other small towns around Spain. |
